Thog's Grog Blog

arrogantbastard.com

I created this blog to provide fans of strong, flavorful ales with a wealth of links accessible from one easily bookmarked site. This is a full bodied, robust blog with a hint of banana. The nutty undertones are balanced with the arrogance of a barking seal. Rating: 97.8 {Nothing's perfect}

My Photo
Name:
Location: Tempe, Arizona, United States

As illustrated in these blogs I am fond of beer. I travel for a living. In my recent history I worked in Durango Co. for 1 year followed by a few months back in Arizona, 10 months in Sioux City, Iowa, and (at last) I'm in Sacramento Ca. My favorite area of this country is the west (This side of the Rockies) the Pacific coast from Santa Barbara, north could keep me busy for the rest of my life. I lived briefly in Humboldt Co Ca. and am irresistably drawn back.I support the Arizona music scene and believe it to be one of the best in this country. I am also frequently found in front of this computer, which I use to compose these blogs, obsessively collect and trade music, and contact and communicate with the greater world. Check out my other blog.

Ska Brewing Co.

Back in February of '05 I declared Ska Brewing Co.'s Decadance to be my new favorite Imperial I.P.A.. After living in Durango for a year and frequenting their establishment during that time (I damn near moved in) I feel the need to revise this honor to more acurately and fairly describe them. I now proclaim Ska to be "THE COOLEST BREWERY IN THE WORLD". They have an extremely relaxed, laid back, environment filled with some of kindest most decent people on this planet. They have developed a unique sense of family and they readily welcomed (adopted?)me into it. I sincerely miss y'all.

Silverton Brewing Co.

Well, the Silverton Brewing Co. has a web page at last so... it's time to link 'em up. Their beers are rich, full bodied and little stronger than the average. With Silvertons elevation of just over 9300 feet, caution is advised for any visiting flatlanders.

Dogfish Head

Dogfish Head's latest offering has arrived in Az. . Although The Fort boasts "a ton of raspberries" it is surprisingly dry. This, I am certain, is due to most of the sugars being converted to a ton of alcohol. At 18% it lives up to their other boast of "the worlds strongest fruit beer."

North Coast, Not Just Good Beer But Good For You Too!

North Coast Brewing Company, producer of some of the best beers on heaven and earth, is at it again. You would think they would be happy with Red Seal Ale, the most well rounded session beer available on earth and Old Stock Ale, Gods' favorite barleywine but no, they've chosen to to accept God's request to create an organic brew for us humans. Proof that God loves us and cares about what we put in our bodies.

Dogfish.Head Brewing Co.

OK, I'm back. Ever since Dogfish Head came to the valley, I havn't been the same. I started out with the light stuff (the 60 minute) and I thought I had it all under control. Unfortunately I developed an unquenchable desire for more. As I searched for ways to intensify my Dogfish experience I quickly progressed through 90 minute ale to the Immortal Ale, until I met my match, the World Wide Stout. This cocaine like extravagence (both in price, at $8.50 per 12 oz. bottle, and Inebreability, at 18% alc.) left me forsaking all else in pursuit of it's lavish charms. My previous life and interests (see blog) became hazy, distant, amorphous memories in the warm protective glow of my W.W.S. But not to worry, I have regained control of my soul and to prove it I'm going to just drink this one bottle....

Organic Baby!

Several years ago my friend Royce and I stopped at the Ukiah Brewing Co.. The second certified fully organic restaraunt in the country! Everything from the beer to the salt and pepper are certified fully organic ( an extremely arduous task. Please read about it from the link provided). ! Here we met Bret Cooperrider the brewmaster who most graciously and enthusiasticly gave us a full tour. When I told him I was gathering barlywines for my collection he even gave me a 1998 Old Hophead (from the defunct Humes Brewing Co.) from his personal stash. Bless his heart. (That's Royce to the far left with headband gettin' ready to boogie down.)
P.S. They also have some noteworthy musical acts, like Burning Spear and David Nelson to name a few.

Lost Coast Found in Phoenix!

What happens when two women, a marraige counselor and a pharmacist, get together and start a business? Why The Lost Coast Brewing Co. outa Humboldt County of course. Certainly the best drug to take the edge off those marital woes. Best of all their product is now available in the Phoenix area.

Ska Brewing Company - Durango Colorado

So... a couple of weeks ago I notice a new bomber of Imperial I.P.A. on the shelf made by Ska Brewing Company called Decadence. Flashy bottle, probably just another ale with a bucket load of hops. Right? Wrong! I have found my new favorite double I.P.A.! Gotta be careful though, at 10% alcohol this 10nth anniversary ale is made for sippin'.

Four Peaks Brewery - Tempe, Arizona

OK, you're right. I've totally neglected The Four Peaks Brewery until now. Sorry. The Blind Date is huge, UNIQUE, and it won a gold at the 1998 G.A.B.F. under the specialty ale catagory.
My mistake.
